WEEE and RoHS

The European Economic Union's Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive is aimed at minimizing the impacts of electrical and electronic equipment on the environment by encouraging manufacturers to design products with recycling in mind and promoting reuse, recycling and recovery of WEEE.   The WEEE Directive applies to a huge range of electrical equipment, including NovAtel GNSS products.

The aim of the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive is to reduce the hazardous materials content in electronic products.   Specifically, it bans electronic equipment from being sold in Europe after July 1, 2006 if it contains more than trace levels of lead, hexavalent chromium, cadmium, mercury or certain brominated flame-retardants.  

NovAtel's Role

NovAtel supports both these initiatives and has taken steps to address their requirements.   Where necessary, our products are labeled with the following WEEE mark.

This is a reminder to our users to return their equipment to their dealer or a recycling facility at the end of its life.   For products not labeled with the WEEE mark, the product serial number can be used to determine the date of manufacture for recycling purposes, as detailed further below.

Date of Manufacture

To assist with recycling efforts, NovAtel labels many of its products with the date the product was manufactured.   To determine the date of manufacture, locate the product serial number, an 11-character string starting with three letters that can be found on a label on the product itself.   The fourth and fifth characters of the serial number are the last two digits of the year of manufacture.   The sixth and seventh characters are the week of the year of manufacture, with week 1 starting the first Monday of the year.

Conflict Minerals Statement

On August 22, 2012, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) adopted a new rule and form, as mandated by Section 1502 of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act (Frank Dodd Act), to require companies to publicly disclose their use of conflict minerals that originated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) or an adjoining country. The new rule took effect on November 13, 2013.

After careful reading of the 'Small Entity Compliance Guide' posted on the SEC website, NovAtel has determined the rule does not apply as NovAtel does not file reports with the SEC pursuant to Exchange Act Sections 13(a) or 159(d). However, NovAtel supports the intent of the legislation.

NovAtel uses Tantalum,Tin,Tungsten and Gold in the manufacturing of its products. Although not required to do so, NovAtel will continue to use reasonable commercial efforts to investigate and determine the source of Conflict Minerals in NovAtel products.  As such, NovAtel has requested Suppliers to complete and return the Conflict-Free Sourcing Initiative Conflict Minerals Reporting Template (CFSI-CMRT) by Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition and Global e-Sustainability Initiative (EICC-GeSI).
